The relatives of young people lost after a tragic blaze at a venue in a Switzerland's alpine town are facing an agonising period of uncertainty for confirmed information and appealing for any details about their family members publicly.

The fire devastated the a popular bar in Cans-Montana, located in the Alps of the Valais region, in the small hours of New Year's Day. Circulated video show the ceiling catching alight as beverages with sparklers are held aloft.

Authorities have indicated that it could take considerable time to formally name the fatalities of the tragedy, which killed four dozen individuals and injured another over a hundred.
